Edo Poll: NYSC Tasks Security Agencies On Corps Members’ Safety

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Monday appealed to military authorities in Benin to ensure the safety of lives of serving corps members who will participate in the Edo governorship election, scheduled for Saturday.

The Director-General, Brig. General Sulaiman Kazaure, made the plea in Benin City, Edo State capital when he visited the 4th Brigade Command Headquarters of the Nigerian Army in the state.
He said the safety of the corps members was paramount for a credible election and solicited for the support of all critical stakeholders in the state ahead of the state governorship election scheduled for September 10.
He said: “We are here to appeal to you given the sensitive nature of the forthcoming gubernatorial election in which my children (corps members), will be used as electoral officers. We are soliciting for your cooperation in ensuring the safety of these children.”
The Commander of the 4th Brigade headquarters, Brig.Gen. Benbella Raji, in his response, informed the DG that the problem normally erupts after elections and that is why he has put mechanisms in place to secure corps members during and after the election by drafting armed personnel to their various units who will escort them to their various lodges after the elections are concluded.
“I want to assure you that whenever the state coordinator calls, I shall not sleep until I give them the necessary assistance,” he added.
The DG, however, warned all corps members serving in the state and those that would participate in the exercise to shun all acts capable of derailing the electoral process just as he solicited for a security of corps members engaged in the conduct of the exercise.
