Malam Murtala Aliyu, the Secretary, Cancer Society of Nigeria in Gombe State, has advised the populace to watch their diet to avoid risk of getting cancer.
Aliyu, also the Head of Cancer Registry and Epidemiology Unit, Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Gombe.
He also advised them to eat more of fruits, avoid fatty foods and desist from such foods that contain preservatives.
According to him, it is unfortunate that in spite of the enlightenment on how to detect early signs of cancer, many people still have less knowledge on the decease.
Aliyu said though, cancer cases were on the increase in the country, it could be treated once detected early.
“But, one of the challenges we are facing is that people normally come to the hospitals when their cases had reached advance stage.
“You don’t expect doctors to perform magic, prevention is always better than cure,” he said.
Aliyu said that the most common cancer cases were breast, cervix and prostrate cancers.
He advised women above 40 years to go to the hospital for mammography, while those below 40 should go for breast scan.
Aliyu said that those taking to alcohol regularly were at high risk of getting liver cancer.
