How to Know Your Baby Gender
Most pregnant women are curious about whether they're having a boy or a girl. Before ultrasounds to tell us for sure, we came up with all kinds of "old wives' tales" to try to predict the sex of the baby. Is there any truth to any of them? Let's find out!
The Wedding Ring Trick
If you're married, tie your wedding ring to a long piece of string and dangle it over your belly. If the ring swings from side to side, then you're having a girl; if it swings in a circle, you're having a boy.
The fact of the matter, however, is that no matter what you dangle that ring over, it is going to swing in one fashion or another just because of the vibrations of your hand. This is not a guaranteed way to tell if you're having a girl or a boy!
The Key to The Mystery
Here's a good one: Pick up a key. If you grab it by the long end, you're having a boy; if you pick it up by the round end, you're having a girl; and if you grasp it in the middle, you're having twins! Now, do you think that could possibly be accurate?
Your Body Shape
You've probably heard this one already, since it's so widely believed. Supposedly, if you carry your baby bump out front, you're having a boy, but if your bump grows from side to side, then you're having a girl.
So is there anything to it? Probably not. The way your bump grows and how you gain weight are due to your body shape and genetics rather than the sex of your baby.
Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice
What have your cravings been like? According to the old wives, if you're craving sweets, that means you're having a girl, but if you're eating a lot of protein like meat and cheese, you're having a boy.
But, like most of these tales, this has no basis in truth. Pregnancy cravings are thought to be your body's way of telling you how to get the nutrients you need, not the sex of your baby.
Look Yourself in the Face
How does your face look? Supposedly, if it gets rounder during pregnancy, you're having a girl; if gets thinner, then you're having a boy.
Again, not true. Everyone puts on weight differently, and that applies during pregnancy the same as any other time. Where you gain your weight has nothing to do with whether you're having a boy or a girl.
Terrible Sickness?
As the story goes, if your morning sickness is particularly awful, it means you're having a girl. Oddly, this one may actually be true! A study done at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that 56% of the women they studied who had especially bad morning sickness gave birth to girls. This might be because women who are carrying girl babies produce higher amounts of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which could set off increased morning sickness.
Go to The Heart of the Matter
What about heart rate? You may have heard that a heart rate about 140 beats per minute means the baby is a girl, whereas anything lower than that means it's a boy.
Again, there may be a tiny bit of truth here! One study at the University of Kentucky accurately predicted the sex of 91% of the male babies included in the study and 74% of the female babies just by monitoring their heart rates. However, no other studies since then have been able to replicate those results.
But Wait! There's More!
Believe it or not, those aren't the only old wives' tales to be found about whether you've having a boy or a girl! Check out these other hints and see if they apply to you.
You're having a boy if:
• Your nipples have gotten darker
• Your leg hair is growing faster than usual
• Your baby's father has also been gaining weight
• You have bright yellow urine
• You look more beautiful than ever
• You get lots of headaches
• Your age at the time of conception plus the number of the month in which you conceived comes out to an even number
And you're having a girl if:
• You find red highlights in your hair
• You're craving fruit
• You feel moodier than usual
• You don't look as gorgeous as usual
• You won't eat the heel from a loaf of bread
• You have dull yellow urine
• Your age at the time of conception plus the number of the month in which you conceived comes out to an odd number
Like most of the stories above, don't put any stock in these ideas. Your best bet is to have an ultrasound to determine whether your baby is a boy or a girl, or just wait until it's born and see for yourself!
