TAMBUWAL'S VIEW ON RESTRUCTURING PAROCHIAL -- AFENIFERE

Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Thursday differed with the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, describing his position against restructuring as “totally parochial.”

While insisting that Nigeria should be restructured from its present political arrangement, the Yoruba apex group reminded the governor of the man “who sits on the back of another man and argues that he would do all within his powers to make the man comfortable for so long as getting off his back is not part of it.”

Afenifere, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, on Thursday, recalled a passage from Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s book, Thoughts on Nigerian Constitution (1967), that any attempt to run Nigeria along unitary lines would attract conflicts, disharmony and complications of governance, except super humans were sourced to run its affairs.

According to him, the latest intervention of Tambuwal on Nigeria’s political and economic problems and the way forward is perfidious and wrong.

He said, “While we acknowledge that  the Sokoto State governor’s call for increase in revenue allocation to the federating units as being consistent with the recommendation of the 2014 National Conference, we are quick to add that his submission that we do not need to restructure Nigeria beyond that is totally parochial and we reject it outright.

“We insist that the present structure of Nigeria is iniquitous, skewed, unfair, unjust and not conducive to justice, harmony, development and happiness of the constituent units of the country.”

Meanwhile, the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has restated his belief in the restructuring of the country, saying his view on the restructuring of the country was misrepresented in a media report on Thursday.

In a statement on Thursday by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, in Akure on Thursday, Mimiko restated his belief in the restructuring of the country and the implementation of the 2014 National Conference report as a genuine pathway to progress in the country.

The governor explained that what the country needed at this time was beyond fiscal federalism, saying Nigerians should join the clamour for the enthronement of true federalism.
