A RICOCHET BULLET HIT A LAGOS TEENAGER DURING POLICE RAID
The Lagos State Police Command has said the bullet that hit Samuel Omojuwa was a ricochet.
The command spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, also said police investigation revealed that no one was attacked with a cutlass during the incident.
It was reported that 18-year-old Samuel was hit by a bullet in the leg on Sunday around 6pm when a police team raided a park and arrested a motorcycle rider in the area.
Our correspondent reported that the victim and his brother, David, were injured after the police attacked them for “meddling” in the operation.
But the command Public Relations Officer, Badmos, said the allegations were not true.
She said, “The Lagos State Police Command does not tolerate police misbehaviour and we don’t condole indiscipline as well. However, this case is different. From the report available to the command, the men were on a legal duty and they had arrested two motorcyclists for violating the traffic rule. Some suspects were even caught with hemp.
“It was in the process of taking them away that some hoodlums came from where they were having a carnival and attacked the policemen, saying the police would not take the suspects away.
“They blocked the road and attacked the four policemen in the van. They threw bottles and stones at them. One of the boys moved to the inspector carrying a rifle and tried to disarm him. The officer fired a shot to send the hoodlums away and the bullet ricocheted and hit the victim.”
However, the brother of the victims, Emmanuel, insisted that they did not attack the policemen.
He said the cops were not provoked before they shot at Samuel and attacked David.
“We have spent over N250,000 on the treatment of Samuel and the police have not taken responsibility, which is very unfair,” he added.
