A total of 35 communities affected by oil spill in Gbaramatu Kingdom in the Warri South West Council Area of Delta State, on Sunday, gave the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation a seven-day ultimatum to commence the clean-up exercise in the area or they will shut down activities at Escravos.
The communities also asked the NNPC and the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company Limited to provide relief materials and compensation for the affected area.
The letter addressed to the NNPC Group Managing Director was signed on behalf of the communities by Johnbull Demebi, Edward Odudu and Chief Moses Bebenimibo.
The spill, which they claimed started on August 17 and lasted for two months, affected Ikpokpo, Tejubor, Okpelema, Opuede, Opuede-Zion, Opuedebubor, Meka-Ama, Oto-Gbene, New Jerusalem Zion, Mala-Gbene, Atanba, Okerenkoko-Gbene, Oporoza federated communities, Gama-Zion and Azama communities, among others
