Buhari, World Leaders Hail Trump

President Muhammadu Buhari congratulated the United States’ President-elect, Donald Trump, on his electoral victory in the Country’s Presidential election.

In a four-paragraph statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President said he looked forward to working with Trump to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
The statement read, “On behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari congratulates President-elect Donald Trump on his victory in the United States presidential election.
“President Buhari also congratulates American citizens on the outcome of the election, which was keenly observed by all true lovers of democracy and those who believe in the will of the people.
“The President looks forward to working together with President-elect Trump to strengthen the already established friendly relations between both countries, including cooperation on many shared foreign policy priorities such as the fight against terrorism, peace and security, economic growth, democracy and good governance.
“As Mr. Trump prepares to assume the position of the President of the United States, President Buhari extends his good wishes to him on the onerous task of leading the world’s strongest economy.”
Meanwhile, the European Union and world leaders, including the United Kingdom Prime Minister, Theresa May, and Russian President, Vladimir Putin, among others, have congratulated Donald Trump on his Wednesday victory as the United States President-elect.
In a joint letter by the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the EU congratulated Trump and urged him to come to Europe for talks “at your earliest convenience”.
The letter said partly, “It is more important than ever to strengthen transatlantic relations. Only by cooperating closely can the EU and the US continue to make a difference when dealing with unprecedented challenges such as Da’esh (ISIS), the threats to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, climate change and migration.”
May said she looked forward to working with Trump as US President.
“We are, and will remain, strong and close partners on trade, security and defence. I look forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump, building on these ties to ensure the security and prosperity of our nations in the years ahead,” May said.
Putin expressed his desire to work with Trump towards restoring the “full-fledged relations,” between the two countries which he said was in a poor state.
Putin said, “I repeat, we understand that this will be difficult, but we are ready to play our part, and do everything to return Russian-American relations to stable and sustainable development track. This would serve the interests of both the Russian and American peoples, and would have a positive effect on the general climate of global affairs given the special responsibility of Russia and the US to sustain global security.”
The President of China, Xi Jinping, has also telephoned Trump to congratulate him.
Jinping said, “I place great importance on the China-US relationship, and look forward to working with you to uphold the principles of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation.”
In a statement on Wednesday by his office, the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, expressed his best wishes to Trump, stating that he looked forward to working with him “to build on the strong relations that exist between the two countries”.
Also on Wednesday, the President of Egypt, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, phoned Trump and congratulated him, stating that Egypt wanted to see more “cooperation and coordination” between the US and itself to bolster stability and peace in the Middle East.
