Akwa Ibom Sets To Have Oil And Gas Free Trade Zone

The Federal Government is set to partner with the government of Akwa Ibom to establish a free trade zone in the state.

This was disclosed on Wednesday when the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Oil & Gas Free Zones Authority, OGFZA, Umana O. Umana, met with the State Governor, Udom Emmanuel in Government House, Uyo.

Umana believes that the establishment of Free Trade zone will be of immense benefits to the people of the state.

He said: “In the light of the obvious economic benefits of the Free Zones concept, we have decided to invite the Akwa Ibom State Government to work with the OGFZA, to establish Oil and Gas Free Zones in Akwa Ibom State. The three locations under consideration are Ibaka, Ibeno and Ikot Abasi.”

According to him, the establishment of the Oil and Gas Free Zone will attract investments; create jobs and fast-track economic development to the state.

State Governor Udom Emmanuel, who led the government delegation to the meeting said he was excited by the idea of oil and gas free zones in the state and promised his administration’s full cooperation and commitment to the project execution.

“The state government would honour its commitment to the project,” Udom said.

On the other hand, Mr Bassey James, Managing Director, Bascom Nigeria Limited and a stakeholder in the state lauded the development.

While appreciating the efforts of Governor Udom Emmanuel, he noted that under his stewardship, developments are gradually coming to the state.

James also praised the governor, insisting that Akwa Ibom state is an investment destination.

"We want Nigerians to come and invest in Akwa Ibom state."

“And apart from this great development, the governor is generating the spirit of industry and enterprise by attracting investors and investments to the state. And of course, he is going to create thousands of jobs for our teeming unemployed and underemployed youths.”

“He is one man who does not focus so much on politics but has sensitized the people of the state to think business and how to grow the private sector to create wealth and prosperity,” James added.

"Today the world economy is having problems; oil prices are going down and that is why we need a governor who is imbued with the knowledge, experience, ability and most of all the political will to manage the economy at a time like this," he said.

Meanwhile, a 77-year-old man said to be the strongest man in the whole of Akwa Ibom state, recently entertained the crowd by pulling a car with a rope round his neck.

The man identified simply as Sampson, is Africa's version of Superman. They also said he is so strong that even 10 men cannot bring his hand down when raised.
