A £15 million private jet belonging to Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has crash landed at a Spanish airport.
The lavish Gulfstream G200 crashed when the plane’s landing gear reportedly broke on impact while touching down at El Prat airport in Barcelona. Emergency services were called and the pilot was treated for minor injuries, but nobody was seriously hurt. A runway was briefly closed while the plane was taken away to safety.
The 31-year-old Portuguese, who become an superstar at Manchester United, bought the jet last year for a rumoured £15m. Ronaldo, who has twice won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for world’s best player, regularly leases the jet to companies and wealthy clients. It was one of these private parties that had hired the plane at the time of the crash.
The Real Madrid star was in fact playing and scoring in his side’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund when the crash happened on Tuesday. A source told the Daily Mirror: “Cristiano Ronaldo, his family or friends were not on the plane. The incident had no major consequences.”
While the cost of repairing the jet is likely to be fairly high, Ronaldo can probably cover it. Last year the striker was estimated to have a personal fortune of some £152m. He’s also rumoured to be about to sign a bumper new contract that could keep him at the Bernabau until 2020.
