A 42-feet tall statue of Moremi Ajaroso has been unveiled in Ile-Ife, Osun state.
According to legend, Ajasoro was a brave princess and heroine who liberated the Yoruba people from slave invaders.
The statue, the palace of the Ooni of Ife says, is the tallest in Nigeria and third tallest in Africa.
Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye, Ojaja II, unveiled the statue on Monday.
The statue was constructed on the same spot Moremi lived several centuries ago.
Moremi Ajasoro’s statue takes over from the statue of Jesus (28 feet) constructed in Imo state, as the tallest in Nigeria.
According to a statement on the website of the Ooni’s palace, the statue was “100 percent locally constructed by Nigerian engineers and youths sourced with sole Nigerian Materials”.
African Renaissance Monument in Dakar (161 feet), Senegal, is the tallest statue in Africa, while the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt (66 feet) is the second tallest in the continent.
