Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 43 captives from Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East part of the country.
This is as fighter jets of the Nigerian Air Force hit fresh Boko Haram locations in the northern part of Borno State.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Sunday that the troops also rescued 500 cows from fleeing Boko Haram members in Mafa.
He said the military decided to carry out the operation on Sunday after eight suspected Boko Haram insurgents abducted some herdsmen at gun point at the Dalakalari General Area of Mafa Local Government Area of the state.
He said the military went after the insurgents after receiving information from well-meaning citizens.
He added that the insurgents fled and abandoned the cattle before Panamru village.
The rescued persons and the recovered cows, according to Usman, have been handed over to the local authorities.
Meanwhile, the Director of Information and Public Relations of NAF, Group Capt. Ayodele Famuyiwa, said some fighter jets of NAF hit suspected Boko Haram locations on the outskirts of Tumbin Gini and Tumbin Kayewa in the northern party of Borno on Friday.
He said the strikes were carried out in response to the intelligence report, surveillance and reconnaissance missions carried out by NAF in the area.
Famuyiwa said a post-strike battle damage assessment conducted by NAF showed that several of the insurgents were killed and their hideouts damaged.
A video released by NAF with the statement showed some of the insurgents said to be holding a meeting when the fighter jets attacked the location running for cover.
“The Nigerian Air Force in continuation of its efforts at finishing the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists conducted several air strikes at suspected Boko Haram locations on the outskirts of Tumbin Gini and Tumbin Kayewa North-eastern Borno State on Friday September 16, 2016,” Famuyiwa said.
