300 Wrestlers To Participate In Self-Defence Workshop

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) on Friday said that it would target young talents for its pool of wrestlers in a catch-them-young tournament in Epe Division of the state.

The commission’s spokesperson, Titi Oshodi, said in a statement in Lagos that it was imperative to have the competition to discover younger ones to replace the ageing athletes for the future.

“The Lagos State WreAstling Association under the auspices of the Lagos State Sports Commission is holding a three-day Closed Wrestling Workshop/Championships.

“This will start from Nov. 17 to Nov. 19 at the Odo Obara High School, Epe in Lagos State.

“No fewer than 300 wrestlers, comprising 30 students each from 10 schools across the state will participate in a one-day workshop on self-defence.

“The two-day wrestling championships will feature three categories of wrestling; Male Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Female Freestyle in the Junior and Senior categories,’’ the statement said.

It quoted the Secretary of the Lagos State Wrestling Association, Ganiat Shomade, as saying that the objective of the programme was to introduce wrestling as a sport to students.

“We want to introduce wrestling to the students in the Epe division and also to promote sports at the grassroots.

“This will also be an avenue for scouting for budding athletes towards the development of wrestling in the state,’’ the statement said.

The closing ceremony for the event will come up at Odo Obara High School, Epe on Nov. 19, at 2.00 p.m,’’ the statement said.
